The city’s public safety services are among the best in the southwest suburbs.  Highly trained police officers protect the safety of the Blue Island’s citizens through community policing and education initiatives.  The department staff and operates a regional 911 system that coordinates emergency response for the city and surrounding communities. The Blue Island Police Department has 40 Sworn officers 20 Part-time sworn officers. There are approximately 75 total employees in the Police Department. Stay tuned to our website as we search our records for old photos from the Blue Island Police Archives. Enjoy some of the new and old photos from the Blue Island Police Department!

The police are looking forward to providing the community members and visitors to our community a safe summer of fun. The department is currently using the “Justice Assistant Grants” to expand neighborhood patrols using the bikes and all terrain vehicles. The department is also using the same grants to deploy extra tactical patrols in the neighborhoods and the business districts. We are also currently scheduling a “Walk and Talk” program utilizing our part-time officers. These will be assigned around several areas of the city.
During the last several months several of our officers have completed a variety of different training programs. Deputy Chief M. Cornell and Sgt. T. Morey completed Northwestern University’s “Executive Management Program”. Sgt. K. Sisk completed the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Boards “Police Executive Role in the 21st Century” program. Cpl b. Rzab completed Northwestern University’s “School of Police Staff and Command”. Sgt. K. Sisk and his brother Officer T. Sisk have completed their Masters Degree in Public Administration. The department will award eight other education awards for officers who have completed their bachelor’s degrees. The department has encouraged officers to complete their degrees and has four officers who will complete their bachelor’s degree in the next year. In November, I, Deputy Chief P. Contreras and Deputy Chief M. Cornell will complete our Masters Degree in Public Administration. One of the current requirements to be a Blue Island police officer is sixty-college credits. The department continues to move forward to provide our officers exceptional training so they can provide profession police services to the community.
Several members of the detective division will receive awards from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their part in taking into custody three bank robbery suspects. The bank robbery took place in Joliet. All of these awards will occur at the city council meeting on June 22nd, 2010.
I would like to remind everyone that there is no July 4th parade or fireworks this year. I would also remind everyone that fireworks are dangerous and illegal. The department will have a zero tolerance policy on possession or igniting fireworks.
The department is starting to plan its “National Night Out” event on August 3rd, 2010. This program allows community members to visit their police department. The visitors are guests of the police department meeting the police officers, the command staff and touring the police department facility. There will be shooting demonstrations, live music, give always, and a jump tent for the kids, free food, and many other interesting activities for all. It’s a great time I hope you all make an attempt to stop by your police department.
As always the summer is a busy time for the police department. The members of the department continue to strive to continue to make the City of Blue Island a safe place to work, visit, live and raise a family.

Chief Douglas E. Hoglund

SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH

Please wear your bike helmet and teach your children to be careful when riding their bike in the street. Bicyclists are just as responsible as a motorist for following the Rules of The Road. Teach your children to move as close to the side of the road as possible and be respectful of passing cars!
This also applies to Walking in the Street. The street is not designed for pedestrians to walk on unless they are crossing at an intersection. Parents teach your children to cross at the crosswalk and to use the sidewalks!
Have a Safe Summer
